An extremely rare Charles I ascribed Wessex area Virgin and Child finial spoon with a large polyfoil nimbus pricked "S.D S.D 1634" engraved in the bowl with a later crest and inscribed on the back of the stem "the Virgin Mary and Christ", the finial and bowl gilded (probably later), stamped in the bowl with T.R monogram mark and on the back of the stem with a cinquefoil and 'animal' marks, by Robert Tyte, Salisbury circa 1634 - 17.75cm long, 1.5oz. Literature: How, Silver Spoons and Pre-Elizabethan Hallmarks on English Plate , vol.II, chap.III, sec.II, plate 61 for illustration and details of this spoon and How notes, "this and another spoon shown on plate 2 of the addendum to this volume illustrate the only examples of this finial that I have seen with a nimbus".
