An extremely fine late 18th-Century silver Butterfield-pattern compass sundial, signed on the upper surface of the horizontal plate N. BION A PARIS , with hour graduations for latitudes 40°, 45° and 50°, V-XII, I-VII , 4-12, 1-8 and IIII-XII, I-VIII respectively, with quarter-hour divisions, the latitude arc graduated 40°-60°, with scroll decoration and bird-shaped gnomon support, the compass box with blued-iron needle with brass cap, the underside with the names and latitudes of thirty continental cities and towns, in the original fitted, marbled paper-lined leather-covered card case, the interior of the lid applied with paper with manuscript notes in German referring to Bion's dates, the owner, and when the instrument was purchased ( Hamburg, 1.25.
