An extensive and comprehensive collection of 239 published books, pamphlets, promotional and publicity material relating to the GWR, including works by A.M. Broadley, A.J. L. White, W.G.Chapman, Edwin A. Pratt, G.B. Barham, G.E. Beer, M.R.James, Archibald Williams, Charles Oman, E.T. MacDermot, S.P.B. Mais, A.G. Bradley, Hugh E. Page, Maxwell Fraser, Ashley Brown, E. Roland Williams, Christian Barman, Kent Karslake and Edward J. Burrow, illustrated with plates, maps or illustrations, the vast majority in original bindings (cloth or wrappers), generally in very good condition, various sizes but most 4to or 8vo, 1904-1947. *** A superlative collection of works comprising almost every title and edition cited in Roger Burdett Wilson's Go Great Western: A History of GWR Publicity, 1987 beginning with a copy of the first publication, A.M. Broadley's anonymously written The Cornish Riviera, 1904, in the original wrappers, and ending with Extracts from the Diary of Mr. George Henry Gibbs with introduction by Lord Aldenham, 1947. Also included is an unrecorded edition of Haunts and Hints for Anglers: Sea Angling, 1924 (pre-dating the first edition of 1925 cited by Wilson). Other salient titles include Historic Sites and Scenes of England, 1904; Southern Ireland. Its Lakes and Landscapes, 1904; South Wales. The Country of Castles, 1905; North Wales. The British Tyrol, 1906; Devon. The Shire of the Sea Kings, 1906; The Cathedral Line of England, 1908; Wilts, Somerset and Dorset. Wonderful Wessex, 1908; Rural London. The Chalfont Country and the Thames Valley, 1909, all anonymously written by A.M. Broadley; the third edition of S.P.B.Mais' The Cornish Riviera, 1934, with cover design by E. McKnight Kauffer; a fine copy in original pictorial wrappers of Golf Courses served by G.W.R., second edition, 1925 with comprehensive list of courses and a map; several titles on GWR locomotives; a near complete collection of "Handy Aids" titles and editions including Shakespeare-Land, Places of Pilgrimage for American Travellers and The Cader Country. "Go Great Western! An evocative phrase...The GWR became a legend almost in its own lifetime...but it was not so much the railway's charcacter as the way in which it was exploited that made the GWR so different, so famous. The management at Paddington understood the public's mood...the GWR always tended to be publicity-conscious, to do more to boost the growth of holiday resorts on its territory, than other railways." David St John Thomas, introduction to Wilson's Go Great Western, 1987.
