AN EXQUISITE SUITE OF MOONSTONE AND SAPPHIRE JEWELRY, TIFFANY & CO., LOUIS COMFORT TIFFANY A necklace, set with a line of graduated oval cabochon moonstones, each enhanced by circular-cut sapphires and platinum beadwork, joined by circular-cut sapphire cluster links, mounted in platinum-- 14¾ ins. long ; and a pair of ear pendants en suite, in leather cases, circa 1908 Signed by Tiffany & Co., designed by Louis Comfort Tiffany Louis Comfort Tiffany, son of Charles Tiffany who was the founder of Tiffany & Co., began his artistic life as a painter. During the early 1880s, he pursued a career in interior decoration and, later that decade, began designing stained glass windows. Beginning about 1893, he turned his efforts to the design and creation of small utilitarian objects in a variety of new media, including blown glass, metals, enamels, pottery and lamps. It was not until after the death of his father in 1902, that he commenced designing jewelry. In 1907, his jewelry business became part of Tiffany & Co. and all pieces made after that date are stamped with the Tiffany & Co. mark. All his jewelry bears the unmistakable characteristics of Louis Tiffany's style; a passion for color and reliance on nature and eastern sources for inspiration. Louis Tiffany preferred gemstones that reacted to light in much the same way as his glassware. Moonstones are translucent stones that allow light to pass through but diffuse it so that objects on the other side are not clearly visible, a characteristic reminiscent of the glass jewels that Tiffany used in the balustrade and firescreen for the Louisine and Henry Osbourne Havemeyer mansion in New York City. The illustrated necklace and ear pendants have been meticulously designed and crafted with Montana sapphires accenting the moonstones; their bluish colors reiterating the bluish cast of the moonstones and the faceted sapphires emphasizing their oval shapes. A platinum spiral design, typical of the ornamentation that Tiffany used on his moonstone jewelry, decorates the ear pendants. For more information on the subject and for an illustration of a similarly designed moonstone and sapphire bracelet, see Janet Zapata, "The Jewelry and Enamels of Louis Comfort Tiffany", pages 97 to 136.
