AN EXQUISITE ART DECO SAPPHIRE, EMERALD AND DIAMOND BRACELET The circular-cut diamond openwork band enhanced by marquise-cut diamond, calibré-cut emerald and French-cut sapphire geometric floral motifs, the largest marquise-cut diamond measuring approximately 12.70 x 6.80 x 3.90 mm, alternating with clusters of cabochon sapphires, mounted in platinum, circa 1920--7 ins. long Fashion influenced both the style and shape of jewelry during the Art Deco period. The rise and fall of the hemline and neckline precipitated a need for different types of body ornamentation and the new sleeveless dress allowed the designers free rein to create jewelry to decorate the now bare arm. Several types of bracelets became popular including bangles, worn on the wrist and upper arm, and flat, flexible bands, frequently worn in multiples on the wrist. The latter were often decorated with stylized designs of flowers or geometricized shapes and motifs in pavé diamonds and accentuated with emeralds, rubies, sapphires and other cabochon gems. The illustrated bracelet is such an example. Emeralds border the central marquise diamonds with "bunches" of cabochon sapphires in between while a winding diamond-set line leads the eye from one motif to the other. Faceted diamonds, cut in marquise and round shapes, are contrasted with cabochon sapphires, softening the design. Although unmarked, this bracelet displays distinctive characteristics of the type of jewelry that Tiffany & Co. was making at this time including superb design and expert craftsmanship.
