Beschreibung:

circa 1859-60. Anonymous sixth plates, housed in a pressed paper case. While not marked with a Neff's Patent, the plates are on heavy gauge metal, suggesting a relatively early manufacture date. The subjects are Western Great Lakes Indians, both bedecked in extraordinary costumes. Each wears an elaborate woven cloth turban decorated with brooches of trade silver and topped by ostrich plumes as well as more traditional eagle feathers. Both wear loom-beaded chokers, and one sports a loom woven sash(?) draped over his shoulders. One holds a small single shot pistol; the other holds a bow. Both wear a beaded bag at their waist, one of which reveals the top portion of what appears to be a half plate-sized cased image. Unfortunately, nothing is known of their provenance, and their tribal affiliation is not known. The silver brooches they wear are typical of those used by tribes in the upper Midwest and Western Great Lakes, however.
