An exceptional gilt-brass giant mantel chronometer of exhibition quality with Kullberg's flat rim balance Dent, 33, Cockspur Street, London. Circa 1855 The case with bevelled glasses to the top and sides, the back glass set with two gilt-brass swivel shutters for wind and hand-set, the dial signed Dent, 33, Cockspur St. London on an oval reserve in the engine turned mask, silvered engraved chapter disc with Roman chapters, engine turned centre with recessed subsidiary seconds and up-and-down rings, blued steel hands, the movement with thick rectangular brass plates secured by six gilt-brass pillars with twin blued steel screws, maintaining power to the massive chain fusee and spring barrel, gilt-brass wheel train with six crossings, each wheel screwed to a collet with blued steel screws, the escapement with oversized gilt-brass platform, diamond endstone to free sprung balance wheel with flat bimetallic rim, circular timing screws and wedge-shaped compensation devices, blued steel helical spring, Earnshaw-type spring detent excapement with jewelled passing stone 12 ½ in. (31 cm. high)
