AN EXCEPTIONAL AND HIGHLY IMPORTANT GROUP OF TWELVE PERSONAL SEALS OF THE KANGXI EMPEROR KANGXI PERIOD (1662-1722) Comprising twelve seals: a rectangular soapstone seal of a recumbent lion with its young bearing the seal chop Tantan dangdang , carved in zhuwen , positive text; a square soapstone seal surmounted by a lion at play with its cub, the seal chop carved with four-character, Jiezhi zaide in zhuwen ; a white jade archaistic phoenix bearing a double-seal chop, Kangxi chenhan in zhuwen and Jigu Youwen in baiwen , negative text; a square celadon jade seal surmounted by a mythical beast, bearing the seal chop, Baohe taihe , in zhuwen ; a spinach-green jade seal of a recumbent mythical beast, bearing a two-character seal, Zhonghe , in zhuwen within a double-gourd border; a square jade seal of a mythical beast, bearing the seal chop, Kangxi chenhan , in baiwen ; a tianhuang seal of oval cross-section surmounted by a mythical beast, bearing the seal chop, Jingyun qinian , in zhuwen ; a tianhuang seal of oval cross-section surmounted by eight cubs clambering on a recumbent lion, bearing the seal chop, Jingyun qinian ; a white jade seal carved with an openwork arch decorated with an archaistic bird motif, bearing the seal chop, Changchun , in baiwen ; a rectangular tianhuang seal of a recumbent mythical beast, bearing a double- seal chop, Kangxi chenhan , in baiwen and Jiezhi zaide , in zhuwen ; a rectangular white jade seal carved in openwork with a mythical beast of elongated body, bearing the seal chop, Peiwen Zhai , in baiwen ; and a rectangular tianhuang seal of a recumbent ox, bearing the seal chop, Tantan dangdang , flanked by a pair of kui dragons, carved in zhuwen ; all the seals are contained within their original fitted brocade box, which is inset with a rectangular bone plaque inscribed with transcriptions of the seal chops Box 6 1/2 x 4 1/8 x 3 in.
