An Entomologist, a French ivory and silk fan dated 1867 by Alexandre, the guards carved in relief with flower tendrils, the sticks carved and pierced with differing dancing cherubs, with gilded and turquoise enamelled upper and lower panels, the leaf painted a classical lady resting from butterfly catching, signed J. L. Hamon, flanked by flowers, the reverse inscribed A Madame La Comtesse Granville/ Les Commissaires Etrangers A L'Exposition Universelle/ Paris XXVI Octobre MDCCCLXVII. Peint Par Hamon, Eventail by Alexandre and Sculpte par C. Rambert, 30.5cm (12in) long, in a box from Alexandre, Paris with Imperial and Royal warrants This fan was given to Lady Rose Leveson-Gower (nee Bowes-Lyon), the Countess of Granville, sister of Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother, by the foreign committee of the Universal Exhibition, thence by decent to the current vendor.
