Katalognummer: CA0919-293 AN EMERALD-GREEN AND WHITE JADEITE SNUFF BOTTLE China, 18th-19th century. The color combination of this bottle is unusual with its dark emerald and apple-green mottling, but the shape and fine hollowing suggest an early example. The high gloss polish on the bottle helps to exemplify the color and translucency of the stone. Provenance: The collection of Rémi Bonnaud, France. Condition: Superb condition with natural flaws to stone and minor wear. Stopper: Pink tourmaline cabochon with some chipping. Weight: 100 grams including stopper Dimensions: Height including stopper 66 mm. Diameter neck 21 mm and mouth 6 mm. Note the recessed oval base with its flat foot rim and especially the very small mouth that makes the fine hollowing even harder to achieve! Jadeite was sourced from a remote part of Burma and first attracted the attention, and then the passion of the Qianlong emperor, although regular supplies of the stone had to await the normalization of previously uneasy relations between China and Burma in 1784. In the latter part of the Qianlong reign, snuff bottles were regularly made of jadeite for, and at the Court, and its ongoing popularity may also be seen in a series of porcelain bottles and other wares with glazes imitating jadeite made during the Daoguang period. Auction result comparison: Compare with a closely related bottle at Sotheby’s Hong Kong on November 24th, 2014, lot 131.
