An embroidered composite prayer arch or Qibleh cloth, Ottoman, circa 1870. the central Bokharan embroidered cotton arch inset with pieced Ottoman embroidered dress fragments, the outside with Suzani-type stylised carnations, blue and yellow guls, 155 by 95cm; together with an embroidered women's headband ('Peshonaband'), Bukhara, c.1900, matching ankle straps; a pair of Uzbek embroidered lappets fringed with beads; and an Afghan tie-dyed silk panel (qty) The Qibleh cloth is illustrated in 'Ottoman Embroidery' by Roderick Taylor, p135. He wrote 'A qibleh cloth made from an imported Bokhara door hanging, the central space filled with portions of two sashes and scraps from a Greek chemise, assembled about 1870, the date of the imported embroidery with pieces from about 1830'.
