An early George III silver hexalobed salver by Thomas Hannam & Richard Mills, London 1763, with a raised gadrooned rim, on three scroll and pad feet, engraved with two shields, 35.5cm (14in) diameter, 1383g (44.45 oz) Property from the estate of the late Betty, Lady Grantchester.This is a very interesting armorial engraving where a maternal and paternal pair are connected emparlée rather than being impaled. The paternal arms are those of the HUGHES family, Baronets of Bergholt, Suffolk, and the maternal arms of the DAMPIER family of Collingshay, Somerset. The blazon: a lion, rampant or (HUGHES) - emparlée - or, a lion rampant sable, on a chief gules a label of five points argent (DAMPIER); crest: a lion couchant or (HUGHES)
