An early 18th-Century octagonal French ivory diptych dial, signed on the calendar volvelle Charles Bloud Le Jeune Dieppe , the cover engraved with polar dial graduated 8-12, 1-4 and with brass socket for pin gnomon, the outer edge with equinoctial dial graduated I-XII (x2) for use in spring and summer, the inner face of the cover with latitude scale on one side 0°-80°, brass latitude arm and three pewter rotating calendar volvelles, the outer with days and months and hours 1-12 twice, the middle one with days 1-30 and index, the inner with rose decorated centre and blue coloured lunar disc visible through off-centre piercing, the inner face of the lower leaf with hour scale I-VII, V-XII around magnetic azimuth dial with silvered pewter foliate decorated ellipse graduated VII-XII-V , the printed paper compass bowl insert engraved with the latitudes of sixteen towns, mostly French arranged round an eight-pointed star, the outer edge graduated 0-90° (x4), the underside of the lower face with revolving pewter volvelle, with calendar scale with months and days, around the perpetual calendar square, all four faces edged with Dieppe "pecked" ornamentation, with two brass hooks and eyes and brass retaining clip for the .5/8in. long brass pin gnomon -- 3.3/8in.
