An early 18th-Century German silver and gilt equinoctial compass sundial, signed Johann Willebrand in Augspurg 48 , the gilt folding hour ring with spring loaded gnomon, silver scale graduated 3 - 12 - 9 , and engraved with foliate decoration and "hand" pointer, running against the folding latitude arc with engraved scale graduated [3°] - 90° and foliate decoration, the octagonal silver base plate with spring-loaded, gilt plummet frame (lacking plummet) , the compass with dial divided into four quadrants, inner silver rose disc with arrow running over the scale and engraved foliate motif, the arrow rotated between 40° East and 40° West of North by a stud in the baseplate, the blued-steel needle with brass cap, the underside with three turned gilt feet and engraved foliate decoration, in red plush-lined, fishskin-covered case, with engraved silver disc to the inside of the lid titled Elevatio Poli , and listing the names and latitudes of 69 cities -- 2½in.
