Nieuhof was despatched by the Dutch East India Company (VOC) to China in 1655 with the aim of securing free trade throughout China. He and his companions, including scientists, also used it as an opportunity for exploration, producing a lively account of the expedition accompanied by numerous illustrations of the scenery, customs, fauna and flora of the country, all after Nieuhof's drawings. The work was originally published in Dutch in 1665 but was translated into German, French, English and Latin.
