He was accompanied by Staunton and a retinue which included Staunton's 11-year-old son, nominally the ambassador's page. The 11-year-old turned out to be only European member of the embassy able to speak Mandarin, and thus the only one able to converse with the Emperor. Of the first work, Hill 1624 notes "...Apart from its Chinese importance, it is of considerable interest, owing to the descriptions of the various places en route which were visited..." Provenance: A Northern California private collector. Lot Amendments Condition: Some shelf wear, joints tender and starting to crack in a few instances; abridged Staunton with darkening & offset to plates, else all very good. Item number: 204986
