An Australian lacquered brass ‘great wheel’ skeleton timepiece Carr’s Clockworks, Melbourne for Bairnsdale clocks, Victoria, late 20th century The three substantial pillar single spring barrel movement with six spoke wheel crossings planted between chamfered inverted ‘Y’ shaped plates incorporating large greatwheel with decorative pierced crossings and spring barrel beneath centre wheel and finally the third wheel paired side-by-side with the large diameter anchor escape wheel with offset anchor pallets between open lozenge section to the plates and regulated via lenticular bob pendulum swinging to the rear, the front with circular silvered brass Roman numeral chapter ring and blued steel moon hands, on integral tapered uprights with oval pad feet applied to rectangular moulded mahogany stand stepped to take a framed glass cover and applied with plate engraved MADE FOR BAIRNSDALE CLOCKS… VICTORIA, AUTRALIA, BY CARR’S CLOCKWORKS MELBOURNE, GREAT WHEEL CLOCK No. 014 OF 250 to front edge, the whole raised on outswept squab feet, the timepiece 36.5 cm (14.25ins) high; 48cm (18.875ins) high overall. The current lot is built to a design developed by French makers in around 1800 and appears to be based upon a version developed by John Wilding.
