AN AUGSBURG SILVER-GILT AND ORMOLU-MOUNTED FRUITWOOD AND OAK QUARTER-STRIKING LARGE TABLE CLOCK WITH CALENDAR By Jacobus Maÿr, Augusta, late 17th Century The dial with annular Roman silvered chapter-ring with pierced brass hands, surmounted by a revolving giltmetal figure of Chronos, the foliate-cast centre within a scallop-shell border, the outer calendar-ring with pierced blued-steel hands within a foliate bezel and encircling a Roman quarter-hour ring, the movement with octagonal gilt- brass plates signed on the inside of the top plate Jacobus Maÿr, Augusta , unusual ring-turned pillars, the chain fusée going train with pin-capped barrels, foliate engraved resting barrels for the hour and quarter-strike, the quarter countwheel on the top plate with foliate pierced and engraved gates and strike on the smaller bell, the hour countwheel on the backplate, verge escapement with original short bob pendulum, the case constructed with a fruitwood and oak carcass overlaid with parcel-gilt foil embossed and tooled with flowers and foliage on a hatched ground, the sides with D-ended movement viewing portals divided by trussed and voluted pilasters embellished with foliate-cast silver filigree decoration with later applied garnets, each volute supporting four giltmetal statues of Mars, Hercules, Temperance and Triumph each accompanied by silver relief medallions in the manner of Johann Andreas Thelot the base on four bifurcated volute feet conjoined by silver garlands of fruit centred by silver foliate-framed medallions depicting the four seasons, on a later black velvet-lined octagonal base with an octagonal silvered copper-framed glazed cover 17in. (43cm.) high, 13¾in. (35cm.) deep
