Beschreibung:

AN ATTRACTIVE ART DECO EMERALD BEAD, DIAMOND, PEARL AND ENAMEL NECKLACE, CARTIER Set with a line of eleven graduated fluted emerald beads, each enhanced by pavé-set diamond and black enamel bell-shaped terminals, joined by single pearl links, mounted in platinum and 18K gold, with French hallmarks (enamel chipped, one terminal replaced), circa 1925--18½ ins. long Signed by Cartier, No. 0202 The multistrand necklaces of Indian maharajahs started the fashion for colored bead necklaces during the Art Deco period. The illustrated Cartier necklace is such an example, incorporating engraved fluted emerald beads with enamel and diamond-set bell-shaped terminals, joined by pearls. According to Hans Nadelhoffer in "Cartier, Jewelers Extraordinary", "The engraved emerald-bead necklaces, often months, if not years, in the making, were naturally valued more highly than the various types of hardstone bead necklaces in Cartier's range of fantasy jewelry." Popular at the time they were made, they are sought after by the discriminating collector and are still considered a beautiful accessory to the well dressed lady. On this necklace, pure colors of green, black and white, a typical Art Deco palette, provides a bold, but subtle statement while the choice of contrasting gem cuts, faceted and fluted, offers an interesting play of different surface treatments. This necklace complements the tutti frutti or fruit salad jewelry with engraved gemstones of flowers and leaves that Cartier made famous during the 1920s.
