ATTRIBUTED TO THE WHITE SAKKOS PAINTER, CIRCA 320-310 B.C.
AN APULIAN RED-FIGURED VOLUTE-KRATER ATTRIBUTED TO THE WHITE SAKKOS PAINTER, CIRCA 320-310 B.C. The obverse with three figures inside an Ionic naiskos, a young warrior wearing a petasos, corselet, greaves and chlamys, holding a pilos helmet in his left hand, a spear in his right, his head turned towards a seated bearded man to the left, a nude youth to the right, wearing a crested Corinthian helmet and holding a shield and sheathed sword, a pair of greaves and a pilos helmet suspended above, the stylobate below with a band of rosettes, to the left, above, a nude youth holding a corselet and a spear, below, a female with a fan and an open box containing an alabastron, to the right, above, a youth holding a crested Corinthian helmet, a shield to the left, below, a female holding a phiale and a fan, an alabastron to her right, band of dotted ovolo and tongues on the shoulders, the neck with a female bust emerging from a blossom flanked by scrolls, bands of rosettes and small and large wave above, ovolo on the rim; the reverse with a filleted stele atop a plinth, flanked by elaborate floral motifs; scrolling palmettes below each handle, moulded duck heads on the shoulders framing the handles, the volutes with moulded female masks, the foot separately-made and perhaps not belonging, with a profile female head wearing radiate stephane emerging from elaborate floral scrolls; details in added white, yellow and red 38¾ in. (98.4 cm.) high
