One 7" reel-to-reel tape recorded by a young man named David Ehrenstein who visited Warhol’s original ‘Factory’ [at 231 East 47th Street in New York City] on March 3, 1965 to interview the artist. Approximately 65 minutes long, this tape serves as 'A Moment in the Life of Andy Warhol' as it records what he was doing while working a “normal” day at the Factory; Warhol is heard answering questions (as the Rolling Stones blare in the background), having phone conversations, and giving directions to Gerard Melanga and others there that day. Though it can’t be heard, Warhol was filming artist Joe Brainard and poet Ted Berrigan for a film, and at the same time, showing two college girls how to stretch his painted canvases (they happened to be his ‘flowers’ silk-screens) onto wooden frames. Warhol is not his typical vague or shy self in this audio snippet, rather he sounds in command and it's interesting to hear this "other voice" from him. When the interview ends abruptly, it leaves the listener wanting to hear more from this 20th century legend. Please note that some excerpts from this recording were redacted and published as ‘An Interview with Andy Warhol’ in a 1966 issue of ‘Film Culture’ magazine and then later reprinted in the 2004 book, I’ll Be Your Mirror: The Selected Andy Warhol Interviews edited by Kenneth Goldsmith but only a small selection from this audio was used. Additionally, no one has publicly heard this recording except Mr. Ehrenstein who has consigned it to this auction. The tape is still housed in its original box with Ehrenstein's 1965-era handwriting noting its content; tape was recently transferred to a CD, the only one known to exist.
