Noah Webster published his "Compendious Dictionary of the English Language" in 1806, the forerunner of his 1828 "American Dictionary of the English Language," which grew from 38,000 to 70,000 words in the 1840 revision. The present edition begins the long-running Merriam-Webster brand, which remains the standard American dictionary. The definition of "golf" makes reference to "Strutt" (Sports and Pastimes of the People of England).
