NORTH AFRICA OR NEAR EAST, EARLY 10TH CENTURY
AN ALMOST COMPLETE KUFIC QUR'AN NORTH AFRICA OR NEAR EAST, EARLY 10TH CENTURY Arabic manuscript on vellum, 149ff. plus 4 fly-leaves, each with 22ll. of elegant small black kufic , vocalisation with red dots, small gold rosettes between verses, with marginal khams and 'ashr medallions on polychrome ground, 101 sura headings reserved against two-colour gold illuminated panels issuing gold and blue palmettes into the margins, large kufic inscriptions in the margins at intervals, carpet pages on the opening folio and last bifolio composed of interlacing and interlocking strapwork forming central roundels connected to an outer border, the interstices filled with two gold designs and small panels of blue, each issuing a palmette into the margin, final folio with later, probably 15th century thulth inscription, some pages loose, very minor staining, the brown morocco binding with flap probably 15th century, with gilt decoration, each side with a central medallion surrounded above and below by inscription cartouches, the other sides with cartouches of strapwork, the spine similarly decorated, doublures with central gilt and blue roundels, seperated at spine, in blue presentation box Text panel approx. 5 x 3½in. (12.7 x 8.9cm.); folio 6½ x 5in. (16.5 x 12.7cm.)
