AN ALBUM COMPRISED OF ±63 BLACK AND WHITE PHOTOGRAPHS TAKEN IN CHINA, CIRCA 1900, DURING THE BOXER REBELLION Different heritage buildings are pictured, e.g.: - (possibly) Prince Gong’s Mansion; - the Yuangmingyuan (圓明園 - the Summer Palace) with, amidst others, the marble dragon boat of Empress Dowager Cixi (慈禧太后 - 1861-1908);; - the Great Wall of China (萬里長城); - the Ming Tombs Sacred Way; - the Drum Tower (鼓樓) of Beijing. Different characters are pictured, e.g.: - French and Japanese armies (or soldiers) and leaders; - torture scenes. Dimensions (various, the biggest): 12,2 x 16,9 cm Note: The Boxer Rebellion was an anti-foreign, anti-colonial, and anti-Christian uprising in China between 1899 and 1901, towards the end of the Qing dynasty, by the Militia United in Righteousness (Yìhéquán), known as the Boxers in English. After the Sino-Japanese War of 1895 villagers in North China feared the expansion of foreign spheres of influence and resented the extension of privileges to Christian missionaries, who used them to shield their followers. Beginning in 1899, Boxers spread violence across Shandong and the North China Plain, destroying foreign property such as railroads. An Eight Nation Alliance of American, Austro-Hungarian, British, French, German, Italian, Japanese and Russian troops moved into China to tame this rebellion. 中国黑白相片集拍摄于中国,约1900年 NOTE: CONDITION REPORTS AND MEASUREMENTS It is up to the bidder to satisfy themselves prior to buying as to the condition of a lot. In relation to Condition Reports, whilst we make certain observations on the lot, which are intended to be as helpful as possible, references in the condition report to damage or restoration are for guidance. The absence of such a reference does not imply that an item is free from defects or restoration, nor does a reference to particular defects imply the absence of any others. The condition report is an expression of opinion only and must not be treated as a statement of fact. Measurements and weight are approximate and the potential bidder may re-ask it to be checked when asking for a condition report.
