TO MAJOR MATHESON 1ST LANARKSHIRE MILITARY ENGINEERS, THEIR LATE CAPTAIN, AS A MARK OF THEIR RESPECT AND ESTEEM - MAY 1864." The 81.5cm blade having additional extra detailed etching, including field guns, bombs and floral decoration. The proof slug suggesting manufacture by Robert Mole of Birmingham and on the reverse of the ricasso the Clan Matheson heraldic crest and motto 'Fac et Spera'.
