AMUNDSEN, Roald. "The North West Passage" Being the Record of a Voyage of Exploration of the Ship "Gjöa" 1903-1907 . New York: E.P. Dutton, 1908.
AMUNDSEN, Roald. "The North West Passage" Being the Record of a Voyage of Exploration of the Ship "Gjöa" 1903-1907 . New York: E.P. Dutton, 1908. 2 volumes, 8 o (230 x 157 mm). Numerous photogravure plates and vignettes in text, 3 maps (2 folding and laid-in) (maps with a few small tears along folds). Original gilt-decorated blue cloth (hinges cracked). Provenance : H.L. Burr (signature on front free endpaper of both volumes). FIRST AMERICAN EDITION of Amundsen's account of his successful voyage through the Northwest Passage in the 70-foot sloop named the Gjöa . Achieving what many others before him had attempted and failed, Amundsen's journey took three years, during which time he made scientific observations and learned valuable Arctic survival techniques used by the Eskimos. In October 1905, anxious to tell the world of the expedition's achievement, Amundsen and a companion set off with dog teams and travelled almost 500 miles across the ice to Eagle City, Alaska, where there was a telegraph connection. On December 5th he reached Eagle City and news of his feat was transmitted to the world. (2)
