AMSTERDAM c. 1740 -- XAVERY, Gerard Joseph (fl. 18th century). Het nieuw geopend Italiaans Toneel, vertonende de wonderlijke ziekte bezwangerheid en baring van Arlequin: benevens de opvoeding van des zelfs Jongen Zoon . Amsterdam: Petrus Schenk II, [c. 1740].

Het nieuw geopend Italiaans Toneel, vertonende de wonderlijke ziekte bezwangerheid en baring van Arlequin: benevens de opvoeding van des zelfs Jongen Zoon . Amsterdam: Petrus Schenk II, [c. 1740]. [ Bound with: ] HALEN, Florens H.J. (fl. 18th century) & XAVERY. Het Italjaansch Tooneel Voortreffelijk in 16 verbeeldingen uytgevoert, Verrijkt met Nederduytsche en Fransche vaarzen . Amsterdam: Schenk, [c. 1740]. Large 4 o (309 x 243 mm), 2 series of prints on a uniform stock of paper in one volume. 2 pictorial titles and 32 etched and engraved plates (title and 16 plates to each series). (Second title inlaid, a few minor stains, some foxing.) Green morocco gilt, edges gilt, by Chambolle-Duru, (color of spine fading). Provenance : Lucien Goldschmidt (sold to Gourary 1956). Two rare Commedia dell' Arte scenarios, published and probably engraved by Schenk after the designs of Xavery, with Dutch verse captions to the first and Dutch, French and German verse by van Halen to the second series. In The Marvellous Malady of Harlequin , Harlequin is pregnant, has six babies of which only one son survives, breast-feeds, cleans and beats him before sitting down to teach him to read; it features Harlequin, Pierrot, Columbine, the Doctor, Scaramouche and others. The second series shows the Commedia figures in seduction scenes. Reproduced in P.-L. Duchartre, La comédie italienne (1925); R.L.
