Paris: Firmin Didot for Mquignon-Marvis; Brussels: Dpt Gnral de Librairie Mdicale Franaise, November 1826. 4 o (271 x 218 mm). Errata leaf at end; 2 folding engraved plates. Modern half cloth, original plain ochre wrappers preserved, UNCUT. Provenance : Binet (presentation inscription from the author on front wrapper cover: " Monsieur Binet, ton ami A. Ampre"). FIRST EDITION OF THE " Principia OF ELECTRODYNAMICS" (DSB), offprint issue (published before the journal issue), second or corrected state, with pages 85-92 correctly paginated and no date on fol. 12/1r. "Having established a noumenal foundation for electrodynamic phenomena, Ampre's next steps were to discover the relationships between the phenomena and to devise a theory from which these relationships could be mathematically deduced. This double task was undertaken in the years 1821-1825, and his success was reported in his greatest work... In this work, the Principia of electrodynamics, Ampre first described the laws of action of electric currents..." (DSB). Ampre presented the work to the Acadmie des Sciences in 1823, and it was printed, under the title "Mmoire sur la thorie mathmatique des phnomnes lectro-dynamiques", on pp. 177-387 of Vol. VI of the Memoires de l'Acadmie des Sciences . "As Vol. VI was the volume for 1823 this date appears on the first page of each signature as an identifying mark for the printer; the whole volume, however, was not published until late in 1827... In the meantime the author's separate was prepared; the last twelve pages were reset and extended to eighteen; the work was repaginated and re-signed; and the '1823' was removed from lower margins (except on sig. 21 where it remained on all copies and on sig. 12 where, together with the original periodical pagination, it remained in a few copies, but was corrected during printing). The separate was issued in November 1826; thus although printed second it was published first" (Honeyman catalogue I:85 [first state, with pages 85-92 mispaginated 257-264]). This corrected, or second, state has pages 85-92 correctly paginated (see Honeyman I:86). En franais dans le texte ; Grolier/Horblit 3a; Norman 50.
