AMMAN, Jost and VIRGIL SOLIS (1514-1562). Effigies regum Francorum omnium, a Pharamundo, usque ad Henricum tertium, ad vivum, quantum fieri potuit, expressae . Nuremberg: Katharine Gerlack and Heirs of J. vom Berg, 1576.
AMMAN, Jost and VIRGIL SOLIS (1514-1562). Effigies regum Francorum omnium, a Pharamundo, usque ad Henricum tertium, ad vivum, quantum fieri potuit, expressae . Nuremberg: Katharine Gerlack and Heirs of J. vom Berg, 1576. Small 4 o (199 x 146 mm). Title with engraved arms of France in ornamental border within a typographic frame, 62 full-page etched bust portraits after Amman and Solis within typographic frames, 29 tail-pieces. (Plate 39 mounted, a few light stains, mostly marginal.) 17th-century Dutch vellum, red edges (head of upper joint split, some light soiling). Provenance : acquired from William Schatzki, 1970. FIRST EDITION. Amman and Solis introduced a significant innovation into portrait iconography by enriching each likeness with ornamental borders and vivid historical scenes from the sitter's life. The book was immediately popular, and the plates were repeatedly restruck over the next half century. Brunet I 234; Fairfax Murray German 154; Lipperheide Fa 3. Small 4 o . 59 engraved portraits, woodcut tail-piece, woodcut vignette of the arms of the Kingdom of Bohemia. (A few marginal tears with small loss to title and H gathering, B1 with small hole touching 6 letters on verso, light browning or spotting, probably missing last unnumbered leaf.) RARE: According to American Book Prices Current, no copy of this work has sold in at least the last 35 years. Each portrait of a Bohemian king is accompanied by a brief biographical sketch.
