Title with engraved arms of France in ornamental border within a typographic frame, 62 full-page etched bust portraits after Amman and Solis within typographic frames, 29 tail-pieces. (Plate 39 mounted, a few light stains, mostly marginal.) 17th-century Dutch vellum, red edges (head of upper joint split, some light soiling). Provenance : acquired from William Schatzki, 1970. FIRST EDITION. Amman and Solis introduced a significant innovation into portrait iconography by enriching each likeness with ornamental borders and vivid historical scenes from the sitter's life.
