Sir Jeffery Amherst, Knight of the most honorable Order of the Bath, Governor of Virginia, Colonel of His Majesty's 15th and 60th Regiments of foot, Lieutenant General,& Commanders in Chief of His Majesty's Forces in North America from 1758 to 1764 .
London: Ryland and Bryer, [1766]. Mezzotint engraved by James Watson after a portrait by Sir Joshua Reynolds ample margins (18 x 13 inches, 455x326 mm). Condition: A few tears extending from the left margin into the image, some surface rubbing. Matted. a fine mezzotint portrait of the great general and british hero of the french and indian war. In 1758, Jeffrey Amherst was promoted to major general and put in command of an expedition against Louisbourg. After capturing the French stronghold, he went on to Montreal the following year. His impressive victory there ended French control over Canada. In 1761, Amherst became Governor General of North America and two years later returned to England where he was made a Knight of the Order of the Bath and commander in chief of the British army. Reynolds’s famous, stunning portrait celebrated Amherst’s victories in the conquest of Canada. In this image, he is dressed in ceremonial armor, with the Order of Bath pinned to his chest. Before him is a map of Montreal, and in the background boats descend the St. Lawrence River. The fourth state of five, with arms in engraved lettering.
