Beschreibung:

Biddle, Owen. THE YOUNG CARPENTER'S ASSISTANT; OR, A SYSTEM OF ARCHITECTURE, ADAPTED TO THE STYLE OF BUILDING IN THE UNITED STATES. Philadelphia: Benjamin Johnson, 1805. First Edition of the second "original" American book on architecture. (The first being Asher Benjamin's, "Country Builder's Assistant," Greenfield, 1797.) 4to contemporary tree calf binding, 10 by 8 inches. 64 pages with 44 engraved plates, 2 of which are folding. SHAW & SHOEMAKER 19551. RINK 1773. HITCHCOCK 177. Hitchock: “A native born American, like Asher Benjamin [who wrote the first original American architectural book in 1797], Biddle emphasizes in his title that his book is especially suited for American use, and that there is by this time ‘a style of building in the United States’ distinguishable from that of England. Benjamin imitated this title the next year in that of the first edition of The American builders’ companion.” (American architectural books, 176). The book bears the name "John Wilson," and it is likely that it belonged to the carpenter/cabinetmaker John Wilson of Washington County, Pennsylvania, who is documented in the Washington County PA area late 1700s/early 1800s. Condition: Rubbing to the contemporary leather binding with wear to the head and tail of spine. Fairly persistent foxing to the text and plates; title page soiled; some spotting and soiling in the inner hinges; plate # 4 with heavier soiling; folding plate #41 with separation at the folds. A rare original edition but one with some condition issues.
