Beschreibung:

American Revolutionary History - an 18th century American bellied cream jug, shaped everted rim, capped double-scroll handle, inscribed 'J & D ... Canfield 1775', shaped pad feet with palmettes to knees, 10.5cm high, struck twice WG**, possibly William Ghiselin, Philadelphia c.1775, 3.5oz The legend on the jug, J + D CANFIELD/1775, is not without resonance in the New England of the period of the American War of Independence. John Canfield was born the son of Samuel Canfield JP and town clerk of Milford, Connecticut and his wife Abigail Peck on 30th November 1740. Educated at Yale, he graduated LLB in 1762 and was called to the Connecticut bar the following year. He was the first lawyer in the town of Sharon, although he later moved to Salisbury, Ct., and in 1772 he became the State Attorney for the County. In 1786 (the year of his death) he was elected to the Continental Congress and called to ratify the US constitution. The jug probably celebrates the tenth anniversary of his marriage to Dorcas Buell (1742-1812) at Sharon on 2nd October 1765. He died on 26th October 1786, leaving a numerous family. Read more
