[American Revolution] The Virginia Gazette (Williamsburg): Alex. Purdie and John Dixon October 6, 1774. Folio, 17 x 11 in., (448x278 mm). 4pp. Newspaper. Disbound; moderately toned, scattered spotting, dampstains in margins, old notation in ink in margin of p.3, text slightly offset, edges chipped. Brigham, pp. 1159-1161, locates 2 copies of this issue. Said to form the basis for the Declaration of Independence, the Suffolk Resolves (printed within), was a unanimously approved resolution by the officials of Suffolk County, Massachusetts, declaring their refusal to obey the Intolerable Acts enacted by the British Parliament. The Resolves urged citizens to cease paying taxes and/or trade with Britain and to undertake militia drills each week. The Resolves were delivered to Philadelphia by Paul Revere where they were adopted, word for word, on September 17th, 1774 by the First Continental Congress. The issue offered here contains the entire text of the Resolves as well as a related letter to the British governor of Massachusetts, Thomas Gage
