TO MAJOR GENERAL HORATIO GATES (1728-1806), "Peeks Kill," [NY], 14 June 1778. 1 page, 4to, light browning, 2 small holes affect 4 letters of text, framed with a portrait. Unexamined out of frame. PROMOTIONS OF CONTINENTAL OFFICERS IN NEW YORK. After the climatic year of 1777 in which British operations were stymied at Saratoga, the summer of 1778 found Horatio Gate's Continental Army in control of most of central New York. Here, James Clinton, in command of a brigade, reports to Gates concerning officer promotions: "Agreeable to your directions, I had the Colonels of the Regiments of my Brigade here in order to settle their Ranks both with respect to their Regiments, and themselves, when they agreed that you should nominate Officers for that purpose. I was desired to solicit your Honor for liberty that Col. DuBois should move his Regiment down near to Col. Nixon. The Colonels also agreed that I sh d. recommend one Isaac Nicolls a Lieut. in Col. Nixons Reg t to be appointed Quarter Master to my Brigade." Upon Gates' departure to command in the South, Clinton was given command of the Northern Department and later led his brigade to Virginia for the seige of Yorktown.
