Goos, Amsterdam. Mit 2 ausgem. Kartusche mit kl. kol. Nebenkarte; umgeben von 3 kol. Bildleisten: seitl. je 5 Abb. von Eingeborenen, oben 8 kl. Ansichten, meist aus der Vogelschau. 39:51 cm. II; Wagner 301b; Lowery 106; Goss 25. - Seltene, dekorative Karte mit Ansichten von "Havan - S. Domingo - Cartagena - Mexico - Cusco - Il. of Moca - R. Ianeiro - Olinda". Es ist die erste in einem Atlas erschienene Amerika-Karte, die Kalifornien als Insel zeigt, die 2. überhaupt nach H. Briggs, u. daher wohl hauptsächlich für diesen bis Anfang des 18. Jh. verbreiteten Fehler verantwortlich sein dürfte. Hier im seltenen 2. Zustand (von 4) mit den ergänzten Ortsnamen von Roger Rea, aber immer noch mit der Adresse von George Humble. - Leicht gebräunt u. tlw. etwas fleckig, Ränder etwas stärker. Rückentext wie meist leicht durchschlagend; leichte Knickspuren. Bugeinriss im unteren Drittel hinterlegt (dort auch gebräunt) sowie kleinere Randläsuren. The first English map of the Americas in an atlas, "also the first general map to show California as an island, based on Henry Brigg's prototype" (Goss). Our copy in the rare second state (of 4), which bears still the first printer's address of George Humble, yet the text on revers is according to Tooley from the 1646 edition by William Humble, and most important of all, featuring already the 4 new names added to the plate (Boston, Connecticut, Maryland and Long Island) attributed to Roger Rea (see also Skelton, Decorative printed maps p. 55). - Col. Some browning and spotting, a bit stronger to margins and to bottom of image; minor creasing. Repaired tear to lower centerfold affecting image, a few small marginal restorations.
