CGC certified: VG+ (4.5). Off-white pages. STEVE DITKO COLLECTION. Cover: Jack Kirby pencils, Steve Ditko inks, Stan Goldberg colors, Sol Brodsky logo design, Artie Simek lettering and logo inks. Story: Stan Lee and Steve Ditko Art: Steve Ditko Colors: Stan Goldberg. Lettering: Jon D'Agostino (as Johnny Dee), John Duffy (as John Duffi). Provenance: From the Steve Ditko Estate, CGC-certified as Steve Ditko's personal copy, and with a certificate of authenticity signed by Mr. Patrick S. Ditko, Steve Ditko's brother. Not cleaned and pressed in order to preserve all traces of Steve Ditko's handling. GPAnalysis: A non-Ditko Collection 4.5 sold for $12,000 in 10/22. A note on the Ditko Collection: Steve Ditko owned from one to three copies of each of the 41 Spider-Man comics that he drew (comprising Amazing Fantasy #15, Amazing Spider-Man #s 1-38, and Amazing Spider-Man Annual #s 1 & 2). The only complete set of 41 Spidey comics belonging to Ditko is featured in this sale; an incomplete set of 23 Spidey comics was offered last year by another auction house; and a final incomplete set of 19 Spidey comics will be offered by PBA next year. Ditko Collection Census: There are two Ditko Collection copies of ASM #1: .5 (Poor) and 4.5. This is the highest-graded copy. Teen sad sack Peter Parker, bitten by an irradiated arachnid, gains amazing abilities, including an almost bottomless capacity for guilt and psychological self-flagellation. Soon a host of malcontents, misanthropes and misfits will find themselves caught in Spidey's web of neuroticism, including his newsman nemesis, J. Jonah Jameson. JJJ debuts on the very first page of this ish, hurling verbal stink bombs at Spidey ("Freak! Public menace!"), and causing a jeering mob to shake their fists at our hapless hero like angry villagers in a pre-Code horror mag. When ASM #1 came out, public confidence in newspapers was high and journalists were generally regarded as trustworthy figures. So why did Lee and Ditko make a media mogul Spidey's chief antagonist? Perhaps Lee and Ditko were still smarting from the drubbing the comics industry took from the news media a decade earlier, when pundits claimed that the horror, crime, and superhero comics of the 1950s were perverting America's youth. Lee and Ditko were both riding high during the pre-Code horror boom, and according to comics historians David Currie and Sean Howe, both men had lasting resentments in the wake of the Comics Code clampdown. In any case, rabid newshound J.J.J. stands as one of Lee and Ditko's canniest creations. Enjoying the Spidey Sale? Order a fully-illustrated softcover catalogue for 30 bucks. Only about 100 copies were printed and they're going fast. To reserve a copy, contact PBA's Director of Comics: [email protected] Consign to PBA Galleries.
