The abolitionist Elijah Lovejoy had established an anti-slavery religious paper, the "Observor," in St. Louis, then was forced to move it to Alton, Illinois, due to threats. There the press was destroyed three times, and was being set up for a fourth when the riots mentioned here occurred.
