Mrs. Putnam tells Hubbell: "We have 103 of these guns hangin[g] 2 deep around the molding in 3 of our rooms....These guns were mostly picked up around the Mts. of North Carolina just a few from South Carolina. We are proud of our collection and have just decided to sell...and use the money trying to restore [Mr. Putnam's] health." Forest & Stream, Rod and Gun. Vol. XXIX {29}, No. 4 (Aug. 18, 1887) and Vol. XXXIV {34}, No. 3 (Feb. 6, 1890). The first volume has articles on Pied Ducks, the Whip Scorpion and Gila Monster, Bear Trapping, Bears in Arkansas, Hunting in the Himalayas, Dogs for Big Game, a number of Fishing Articles and more. The second issue has: Wingless Birds of New Zealand, Evening Grosbeak in New England, Vermont Game, Notes from Michigan, Trout in Mexico, Dogs of the Day, etc., plus advertising for Log Cabins and How to Build Them.
