ALMELOVEEN, Theodoor Jansson van (1657-1712). De vitis Stephanorum dissertatio epistolica, in qua de Stephanorum libris, quos eorundem officinae impressos subjecto illorum indice agitur. Amsterdam: apud Janssonio-Waasbergios, 1683. 2 parts in one volume. Small 8 o (148 x 98 mm). Engraved portrait of Robert Estienne. Contemporary mottled calf (light wear to spine). Provenance : Chicago, Mundelein College Library, Presented by Rev. J. Rothensteiner (bookplate). FIRST EDITION of Almeloveen's combined biography and bibliography of the Estienne family and the books printed by them is a pioneering achievement, being the earliest of its kind. The second part has the dropped title (following a two-page preface addressed to the reader), "Index Librorum, qui ex omnium Stephanorum officinis unquam prodierunt." It is a respectable effort, listing c. 750 works. Renouard, 160 years later, in the second edition of his Estienne bibliography only exceeded Maittaire's work of 1709 (see lot 1042) by 20 (Besterman's estimate). Almeloveen originally studied humanoria in Utrecht under the celebrated polyhistor Joh. Georg Graeve (to whom the above work is dedicated) and later on medicine, which he taught, as well as history, rhetoric and Greek, at Harderwijk University. Through his father he was related to the Jansson family of printers.
