DONATED LOTS IN AID OF CREATING A THEATRICAL WORKING SPACE FOR MAISON JACQUES COPEAU IN BURGUNDY Jacques Copeau was a theatre director who played a major artistic and creative role in 20th century theatre. He quit Paris in 1924 with a troupe of actors, designers and technicians to establish a theatre of excellence based in Pernand-Vergelesses, in the heart of the vineyards of Burgundy, north of Beaune. Unique experiences took place in this wine-grower’s village, mingling theatre school, creativity and abundant performances across the region, France and internationally. After Copeau’s death in 1949, the project was kept alive by his family and friends, now with the theatre director Jean-Louis Hourdin. Today, it is entering a new phase, with the creation of a permanent working space, able to host its diverse activities. The school in Pernand-Vergelesses has fallen empty, thanks to a school consolidation in the neighbouring village of Savigny-lès-Beaune. Adapted to its needs, this beautiful project will provide the Maison with the rehearsal and creative spaces it needs, while re-vitalising the village school building. When Meursault wine-grower Jean-Marc Roulot – also a well-known film and theatre actor – heard of this he immediately decided to donate a Jeroboam of Meursault-Perrières 2010 to contribute to the funds being raised for the project. More than 20 of his friends – including many of Burgundy’s greatest Domaines and Merchants – have followed suit, donating large formats, special bottles and thrilling rarities for this charity auction. The provenance and condition of all these lots is perfect, since they come directly from the cellars of the estates (with one exception, see below). All funds resulting from this sale will go directly to Maison Jacques Copeau. Jean-Marc Roulot, Meursault vigneron, writes: Maison Jacques Copeau in Pernand-Vergelesses has a prestigious history and a special place in the world of French theatre. Nearly 100 years ago, Jacques Copeau and his troupe developed a highly original artistic, educational theatre project. Thanks to another great man of the theatre, Jean-Louis Hourdin, and the team around him, today this project is alive, putting out new shoots locally and internationally. Activities include artistic education, training for actors, theatre workshops, new writing. Burgundy is a vibrant, creative place, whose cultural perimeters are not restricted to the annual production of – such is our aim – some of the world’s greatest, most delicious wines! This project in Pernand-Vergelesses is supported by the Culture Ministry, the Région Bourgogne, the Côte d’Or département, the commune of Pernand-Vergelesses and by many individuals. Superb wines have been generously donated by some of Burgundy’s greatest wine-makers, with all bottles originating directly from the estates (with a brief halt in Beaune, for the gift from l’Athenaeum bookshop/wineshop). I urge you to place strong bids for these remarkable bottles, and to join with me in supporting this exciting initiative. Anthony Hanson MW writes: My wife and I have a home in Pernand-Vergelesses and fully support this remarkable project. I will be happy to arrange (subject to mutually-convenient dates being agreed) for successful bidders for these lots to visit the Maison Jacques Copeau, if they are in Burgundy. It is a beautiful 18th century building, a French Historic Monument, classified a House of the Famous (Maison des Illustres). It lies at the heart of the village of Pernand-Vergelesses, facing Corton-Charlemagne vineyards. With many thanks to Domaine Bidot, Bonneau du Matray, Comte Armand, Tollot-Beaut, Jacques-Frédéric Mugnier, Bouchard, Louis Jadot, Dujac, Arnaud Ente, Marquis d’Angerville, Grivot, d’Eugenie, de Montille, Domaine des Lambrays, Faiveley, Olivier Leflaive, Méo-Camuzet, Michelot, Comtes Lafon, Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, Roulot, Albert Bichot, Louis Latour, Comte Liger-Belair and l’Athenaeum for their kind and generous
