ALKEN, Henry. The Beauties and Defects in the Figure of the Horse . London: S. and J. Fuller, [1816]. 4° (277 x 184mm), engraved title with circular vignette, 18 hand-coloured etched plates. (Occasional light soiling, plate 18 with small corner repair.) Full red morocco gilt by Tout, top edge gilt, original pictorial wrappers bound in (a few light scuff marks and blemishes, wrappers soiled and restored at corners). A GOOD, TALL COPY of the first book published under Alken's name. He mentions his 'habit of riding young and violent horses with fox-hounds', and of having a mare which caused him 'four or five falls a day upon an average, and all in consequence of her violent bucking leaps.'
