ALKEN, Henry. Symptoms of Being Amused . London: Thomas McLean, 1822 [but watermarked 1827]. Oblong 2° (260 x 360mm). Etched title, frontispiece, and c. 200 vignettes on 40 plates, all hand-coloured. (The last two plates with small losses in the margin, tear touching one plate, the frontispiece lightly yellowed and with some offsetting.) Full burgundy morocco by Riviere and Son, lettered and panelled in gilt, gilt turn-ins (corners rubbed, free endpapers with small chips). A 'very popular' series, the companion to Symptoms of Being Amazed , both dating from 1822 and published at four guineas in colour. Here in a handsome binding by Riviere.
