(Slight soiling of plate margins, some offsetting and light spotting to text.) Original printed wrappers with title on front and advertisements for Thomas McLean's books, the majority by Alken, on back cover (edges worn, front cover split along fold line, repaired tear in rear cover). Provenance : C. Sanctuary, March 1871 (inscription on cover) -- Fitz Eugene Dixon (blank sheets on inside of wrappers pasted over his manuscript notes; his sale, Anderson Galleries, New York, 6 January 1937, lot 43) -- Prince Henry, Duke of Gloucester (bookplate; his sale, Christie's London, 26-27 January 2006, lot 612). THE DIXON-GLOUCESTER COPY IN ORIGINAL WRAPPERS. The wrappers record the original publication cost of one guinea for these finely coloured plates showing the two Londoners, Peter Pop and Sam Slop, filling the rural solitude with ill-aimed blasts from their guns.
