[Hunting Drawings. c. 1815-30] A collection of 13 pencil drawings of Hunting scenes (9 on paper, 4 on thin paper, drawn on each side), various sizes, including 6 drawings from Alken's Sporting Notions series inscribed 'A Gad I had no notion that picking up a Fox was such sharp work Getting hold of the Brush a fox catching'; 'I have a strong notion that this is a coal hole Going'; 'I have a Notion that I am not quite up to this riding in Surry'; 'I have a very strong notion I should not like stag hunting a Stag Hunting'; 'I have a strong notion that this bit of timber will impede my progress excessively - Hoy - Hoy. My Good fellows - have you any Notion where you can get a saw'; and 'I have a Notion the this may be called riding to the Hounds at a smashing pace' one signed Alken (lower left), 2 with Whatman 1828 watermarks, with 3 further drawings on paper, 1 watermarked Ruse & Turners 1814, 2 entitled 'Swell & the Surrey No 1 and No 2.' and 4 pencil drawings on tracing paper inscribed in ink, 1 watermarked Ruse & Turner 1814. Loose in later red half morocco oblong folder. An interesting collection of pencil drawings in which Alken (as usual) explores the comical and so often dangerous element of hunting and the follies and foibles of country life. (13)
