Cabinet photograph signed ("Alice of Hesse 1889"), as Princess of Hesse-Darmstadt, n.p., 1889. 167 x 107mm. (6 1/2 x 4 1/4in.) including black mount, mount and verso with imprint of Backhofen, Darmstadt. A softly-lit, shoulder-length portrait of the youthful princess, five years before her marriage to the ill-fated Nicholas II of Russia. Very rare. Alexandra (1872-1918), daughter of Grand Duke Louis IV and a grand-daughter of Queen Victoria became czarina upon her marriage to Nicholas in 1894; she was criticized for allowing herself to be influenced by the religious fanatic Rasputin, who claimed to be able to treat with prayer the hemophiliac condition of her son. She and her family were captured and killed by Bolsheviks in 1917.
