Beschreibung:

ALDUS] PETRARCA, FRANCESCO [MANUZIO, PAOLO-editor]. Il Petrarca . [Venice: heirs of Aldus and Andrea d'Asolano, June 1533]. Fourth Aldine edition of Petrarch, preceded by those of 1501, 1514 and 1521. Venetian binding (heavily restored), in gilt and blind, the covers with a curious emblematic stamp of a figure holding a billowing sail or banner, all edges blue. 6 1/4 x 3 3/4 inches, 183, [45] ff., collating a-z, A-E^(8), F^(4), the first and last page with the Aldine pressmark. Binding rebacked, neat inlays restoring leather losses to the covers (the figure in gilt on the front cover almost entirely lost), lacking ties, but sound; internally generally fresh, an unpressed copy. A charming and quite uncommon Aldine edition of Petrach. It is dedicated by the twenty-one year old Paolo Manuzio to the marchese D'Oria and is one of the first books to be printed by the newly re-opened Aldine Press, after the death of Andrea d'Asolano in 1529. Adams P 802; Renouard 108/5; Ebert 16404. Provenance: From the Library of Leslie Katz, founder of the Eakins Press C
