Frankfurt: Nicolaus Bassaeus, 1580. 8 o (160 x 95 mm). 130 woodcut illustrations by Virgil Solis and Jost Amman Interleaved by Johannes Bernhold to serve as an album amicorum. (Some browning, lower blank portion of title torn away.) Contemporary German blindstamped pigskin over pasteboard stamped "IBG" and dated 1589 on upper panel (some staining). Provenance : Johannes Bernhold Gunzenhausen ("Johannes Bernhold Gunzenusan" contemporary inscriptions on pastedown, and initials on binding); acquired from Goodspeed's Book Shop, 1972. Second German edition of Held's translation. In the introduction Held explains what an "emblem-book" is, what the emblems represent, and what the book is trying to achieve. He defines the contents of the emblem book and its purpose. It includes "130 very pretty woodcuts of emblems executed under the direction of J. Amman and Virg. Solis" (Praz). This copy is interleaved for Johannes Bernhold Gunzenhausen to serve as an album amicorum at Wittemberg in 1589. The album amicorum INSCRIPTIONS INCLUDE ENTRIES BY THE DISTINGUISHED LUTHERAN THEOLOGIANS: Heinrich May (1589), Polycarp Leyser (1589), Georg Mylius (1589), David Voit (n.d.), Eberhard von Weyhe (1589) and others. VERY RARE: according to American Book Prices Current no copy sold at auction in at least the last 35 years. Landwehr German Emblem Books 31; see Praz Studies in Seventeenth-Century Imagery p. 251 (1566 edition).
