Title: Albumen photograph of the Jubilee Singers seated or standing in studio setting Author: Place: [Nashville, TN] Publisher: Date: c.1870s Description: 8.2x12.1 cm. (3¼x4¾"), on original mount with the subjects names printed lithographically in the lower margin. Photograph of the six women and four men who made up the original Jubilee Singers at Fisk University, the group formed in 1871 (with nine members, which had gown to eleven by 1873) to give concerts to raise money for the university, which opened in Nashville in 1866 as the first American university to offer a liberal arts education to “young men and women irrespective of color.” According to the university's website, "The original Jubilee Singers introduced ‘slave songs’ to the world in 1871 and were instrumental in preserving this unique American musical tradition known today as Negro spirituals." The vocal ensemble is still active today. Lot Amendments Condition: Light foxing to the mount; image near fine. Item number: 258112
