Title: Album with approximately 300 silver copy photographs made by T.E. Hecht of images of San Francisco from the 1850's to the 1890's Author: Place: San Francisco Publisher: Date: 1850's-1890's Description: Nearly all of the mages captioned in the negative, with the place and often the date and photographer of the original image, as well as Hecht's name and address, and a negative number. Most photographs approximately 18x24 cm. (7x9½"), glued to black album leaves. The album measures 25 cm. high by 32.5 cm. wide by 16 cm. thick (10x12½x6¼"), half leather and cloth. Marvelous and massive photograph album once owned by longtime mayor of San Francisco James "Sunny Jim" Rolph, Jr., The images range from copies of George Fardon's rare photographs of San Francisco in the 1850's to views of the Cliff House at Ocean Beach in the 1890's, with the Market Street Railway in 1865, the Stock Exchange at Pine and Montgomery in 1880, the What Cheer House i 1865, the offices of the Daily Evening Post at Sacramento and Montgomery in 1884, the Chinese Quarter in 1870, California Street Cable Cars in 1875, a cable car of the Clay St. Hill R.R. Co., ruins at Bush and Market Streets cause by the 1868 earthquake, the Palace Hotel in 1875, numerous general views of the city from various locations, and many more. The originals of these image in many cases are no longer extant, and Hecht's copies are the only remaining to show the marvels of San Francisco in the latter half of the 19th century. Lot Amendments Condition: Covers worn, spine torn and loose; most images very good. Item number: 253176
