(11 7/8 x 7 7/8in.), early nineteenth-century quarter brown morocco gilt over marbled boards, backstrip defective at top, joints worn, foremargins slightly wormed from k3 to end, catching printed marginalia on eight pages, the wormholes filled from y4 to end, some old, faint staining, remains of a patch on title. First edition of the first four books by Priscianus, edited by Hermann, Count of Neuenaar; the Albucasis is the Latin version of Gerardus Cremonensis, title within ornamental woodcut border, numerous woodcuts in text of the Albucasis showing a wide variety of surgical instruments, 8 full-page woodcuts by Hans Waechtlin (man with many wounds, cauterisation, amputation, arrow extraction, blood-letting, skeleton and two of trepanning), ornamental woodcut initials. Abu al-Kasim Khalaf Ibn Al-Abbas, commonly known as Albucasis (d. 1013?), was a native of Cordoba in Moorish Spain. His work is the single purely surgical work left us by the Arab world. The full-page woodcuts made their first appearance in Gersdorff, Feldtbuch der Wundartzney (Strassburg 1517). Adams P 2119; NLM/Durling 3764.
